Eyebrow Henna Tint aftercare: Do's & Don'ts for the first week
By Browtastic Threading & Henna | July 13, 2026
We hear it all the time in Woodbridge: our team is gentle and super fast, and you walk out loving your new henna brows. Now protect that result. The #1 rule is simple: keep your brows dry and oil-free for the first 48 hours. That means no water, no face oils, no brow makeup, and no rubbing.

Quick reminder: Eyebrow Henna Tint is a semi-permanent henna tint applied to your brow hairs and the skin underneath. That skin stain is what gives you that fuller, more defined look, and it needs a little quiet time to set.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the window that decides your stain
If you do one thing right, do this part. We spend time talking you through the process in the chair, and aftercare is the reason your brows keep that crisp, filled-in look instead of fading patchy early.
Do
- Keep brows dry. No splashing water on them, no long hot showers where steam hits your face.
- Sleep carefully. Try not to mash your brows into the pillow the first couple nights.
- Let us know if you have questions. A quick message beats guessing and accidentally stripping the tint.
Don't
- Don’t apply oils or oil-based skincare near the brows. Oils are the fastest way to fade henna.
- Don’t put brow makeup on top. Pencils, pomades, and tinted brow gels can smear pigment and add friction when you remove them.
- Don’t scrub. No cleansing brushes, no exfoliating pads, no picking at dry skin.
Woodbridge tip: Summer humidity can make you sweat more than you think. In July and August, we recommend being extra strict about workouts and steam those first two days so the stain doesn’t lift unevenly.
Days 3 to 7: keep the shape, keep the color, don’t over-clean
After 48 hours, you can start treating your brows normally again, but gently. This is the week where busy Metropark commuters and parents do best with a simple routine that takes 30 seconds.
Cleansing and showering
Use a mild, oil-free cleanser around the brow area. Clean with your fingertips, rinse lightly, then pat dry. In the shower, keep your face out of the direct stream and avoid long steamy showers if you notice your tint fades fast.
Sweat, pools, and hot tubs
We generally recommend skipping heavy sweating, sauna and steam rooms, swimming pools, and hot tubs for at least 72 hours. If you want the deepest stain, give it the full week. Chlorine and constant moisture are a recipe for early fade.
What to keep away from the brows for 7 days
- Exfoliants and acids (anything labeled AHA, BHA, peel pads)
- Retinol or retinoids near the brows
- Waxing or tweezing around the henna area
- Aggressive rubbing when removing makeup
And yes, we’re still going to be gentle and precise at your next visit. That’s the vibe here. A lot of our brow regulars come in as a family, and we take the same care with a first-timer as we do with someone who’s back for their routine touch-up.
Oil-free products that actually help henna brows last
You don’t need a shelf of products. You need the right types of products, used lightly.
Our simple routine (day 3 and on)
- Cleanse: mild, oil-free face wash, no scrubs around the brow area.
- Dry: pat, don’t rub.
- Moisturize only if you need it: a light, oil-free gel like aloe vera tends to be a safe choice.
- Hands off: the more you touch your brows, the faster they fade.
If you’re heading to Woodbridge Center Mall after your appointment, toss a couple things in your bag: blotting papers and a clean tissue. That way you can dab sweat or moisture near the brows without wiping across them.
When to reach out to us (and when it’s just normal fading)
Henna brows fade naturally over the next few weeks. How long they last depends on your skin type, your skincare, sun exposure, and how oily your brow area runs. If you’re in Iselin, Colonia, Avenel, Perth Amboy, Carteret, or Rahway and you’re planning a touch-up, we’ll help you time it so you’re not overdoing it or waiting too long.
“She speaks to you by name, tells you everything she is doing, and asks if you’re comfortable.”
one of our regulars
Reach out if you notice anything that feels off, like irritation that doesn’t calm down, or if your brows got soaked in the first day and you’re worried the stain won’t take evenly. We’ll talk it through and tell you what to do next.
Ready for your next brow refresh? If you loved your fuller, defined look and want it to stay consistent, ask us about a maintenance plan when you’re in. Some clients like to pair henna with mapping and threading so the shape stays clean while brows grow in.

Eyebrow Henna Tint aftercare FAQs we get every week
How long should I keep my eyebrows dry after an Eyebrow Henna Tint?
Keep them dry for 24 to 48 hours. If you want the best skin stain, aim for the full 48 hours with no water, no steam on the brows, and no oily skincare near the area.
Can I exercise after getting an Eyebrow Henna Tint?
We recommend skipping heavy workouts for at least 72 hours because sweat and frequent wiping can fade the tint early. If you do exercise sooner, keep your hands off your brows and gently dab sweat nearby without rubbing across them.
When can I wash my face or shower after eyebrow henna tint?
After 48 hours, you can wash your face and shower normally, but cleanse around the brows gently with an oil-free cleanser and pat dry. Try to avoid long, steamy showers hitting your face directly during the first week.
How long will my eyebrow henna tint last before it fades?
It fades gradually over the next few weeks. The exact timing varies based on your skin type and routine, especially oils, exfoliants, sun exposure, sweating, and how often the brow area gets wet.
Can I apply makeup or eyebrow pencil over henna-tinted brows?
Avoid brow makeup for the first 24 to 48 hours. After that, you can use makeup if you want, but be gentle when removing it. Strong makeup removers and rubbing are common reasons henna fades faster.
